PPI Newcastle held an Indonesian Cultural Event

Indonesian Students Society in Newcastle (PPI Newcastle) recently held cultural performance titled Indonesia, A Country with Thousand Faces.  One of the committee Nadine Kuntjoro between Antara London correspondents on Saturday stated that the aim of the event is to introduce Indonesian culture internationally. She also mentioned cultural performance is one of PPI Newcastle upon Tyne programme in the series of annual “Diversity Week” organised by Northumbria University.  “Diversity Week” arranged by Northumbria University also involved students from other countries such as America, Australia and South Africa, she said.  

She also pointed out the event held for the third times in order to celebrate the existing diversity among students and expanding knowledge with variety of different cultural background. The performance took place at Red Bars, Student Union Northumbria University attended not only from UK students but also international students. The show started with a music video documenter of Indonesia.  Then followed by acoustic music by Jano Sukarya, Dice Mentari and Rian Hamzah “Omelette” sings “Terbang” by Gigi. When Ten2Five band performed “I will fly”, they received an enthusiastic response from the visitors.

Jennifer Lie, as the person who responsible for the event, delivered a brief presentation of Indonesia started from geography, culture, and the origin of famous Kopi Luwak. Four-pair of Indonesian students, including Arie Wibowo, the former president of PPI Newcastle upon Tyne period of 2009/10, presented a cultural dance from Betawi called Tari Ngibing.  The event continued to a performance of fashion show by amateur models which consist of Indonesian students, showing traditional and modern Indonesian batik as well as traditional fashion from Padang and Betawi.  

Accompaniment of sweet voice from Novitia Fikaristi and excerption guitar from Henrio Respati presented “Tanah Air” song by Ibu Soed and “Manuk Dadali”, a traditional song from West Java by Sambas Mangundikarta as the last performance of the event, received response from students from all over the world, said Nandinne Kuntjoro.
